EUGENE, Ore. - Marcus McGovern almost quit wrestling his sophomore year.

"He was frustrated. I was kind of frustrated as well," Sheldon High School wrestling coach Elias Soto said, "and there was really no solution except for just going through the progression and having a lack of experience."

Now the senior hopes to have a season to remember for the Irish. At a recent match, McGovern pinned all four of his opponents and took first place.

"I knew I had all the potential to be a really good wrestler," McGovern said. "I just couldn't quite figure it out. Wrestling is just a tough sport, mentally and physically."

"It was only a matter of time before it clicked," coach Soto said, "and it did this year."

After rediscovering his passion for the sport, McGovern has hit his stride the past two seasons. Stylistically, he poses a combination of different threats on the mat.

"He's very physical, very mythodical, has a gameplan," Soto said. "He understands his comfort zones."

"I just try to win my stand up game, get the take down first and you know set the tone early," McGovern said.

"To sum Marcus up," Sheldon High School wrestling coach Elias Soto, "he imposes his will and mentally breaks his opponents."
