US juniors a chance to qualify for Worlds

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon got off on the right foot at the US junior championships last weekend with incoming freshmen Ashlee Moore winning the heptathalon.

This weekend more current and future ducks are looking to qualify for worlds.

One of those is former Sheldon track and cross country athlete Maggie Schmaedick.

Schmaedick ran in some big races this year for the Ducks, which she says has helped her not get so stressed before big events.

But coming in as the top qualifier in the 5K, she says the pressure is on.

"It definitely puts a little bit of pressure," she said. "I've tried not to look at the field that much and just kind of run my own race, but yeah it's always intimidating knowing that you have the fastest time and you kind of have a target on your back so that's intimidating but hopefully I can just go out there compete and just see what I can do."

The US junior championships begin Saturday at Hayward Field. The Worlds start July 22 at Hayward.
