Yes preventable if drivers start looking out for walkers. You should always be on your guard when driving. Not talking on the phone, not flipping radio stations. A child could easily run out in the road. I am tired of people blaming the walker. I regularly almost get hit by a car turning left when I am crossing the road downtown. Broad daylight I am in the middle of the road and they will get mad at me when I have the cross light. I see it all the time at South Eugene High 19th and Pearl. No one looks and sees the pedestrian. They just want to beat the car that is approaching across from them.

J-walking was once illegal for a reason, and if people don't use the crosswalks things like this happen. This is a very sad, but very preventable accident.
