WINSTON, Ore. (KMTR) -- Mary Mekes has lived in Oregon for about twenty years and currently resides in Winston, but she grew up in New York. She's part of a big Italian family and many of her relatives still live there including her sister, nieces, and cousins.
As of this morning, Mekes was able to get in touch with everyone except her Aunt Fina and Uncle Nino who live in Yorktown, New York, where all power has been lost. The couple raised Mekes and she's very close with them. She's definitely concerned for their safety.
Mekes just returned from a visit to New York but says she'll go right back if her family needs her help.
"I'm worrying and anxious," says Mekes. "I just came back two weeks ago and I'm very anxious, seeing the devastation. If they need me, I'll be there in a flash. [If] my sister ever needs me, or my family, I'm just a flash away."
Mekes says a large tree fell on her cousin's car, but most of her family still has power. One of her cousins is attempting to find her Aunt Fina and Uncle Nino today to make sure they are safe.
She is trying to stay as calm as she can but Mekes is very anxious to hear from her aunt and uncle. She said it's times like these that she remembers we're all one United States and although the disaster is hundreds of miles away, its effects are being felt nationwide.
