Eugene (KMTR) - Organizers are finalizing details for the annual Whiteaker Thanksgiving Dinner but they still need some help to make the event a success.
More than 2,500 people showed up last year for the free turkey dinner and clothing giveaway. With a struggling economy, organizers expect even more this year.
Dinner Coordinator Beverly Farfan says a dental company has donated hundreds of toothbrushes, they've collected coats, blankets and sleeping bags, but more items are still needed.
"People who are homeless, they're there the night before,” Farfan says, “and everyone feels welcome. It's just neighbors helping neighbors."
Items still needed include more sleeping bags, umbrellas and coats—especially large and extra-large. A drop-off day for donations is scheduled for this Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Whiteaker Head Start Center at 21 North Grand in Eugene.
Volunteers are also need to help serve the dinner.
