Eugene (KMTR) - Community organizations are uniting in the name of Major Thomas Egan, a homeless veteran who froze to death on the streets of Eugene during snowstorms last December.
Following his death, the Egan Warming Center was created to help people who are homeless.
Mindful that cold weather is coming, many churches around Eugene which involved in the warming center donated their entire collection plates Sunday for the center.
The warming center, which started as one building, is now a collection of basements and church halls.
Organizers hope to raise $10,000 November 15th. Then, when the temperature gets below 28 degrees, homeless people will have a warm place to spend the night.
“They have a hard enough time just keeping ID's, let alone keeping a sleeping bag or a tarp or a safe place where they can be dry. So it really can be a life-threatening situation," said Pastor Dan Bryant of First Christian Church.
In addition to donations, volunteers are needed to help during those nights. A training session is scheduled this week.
