Eugene (KMTR) - A group dedicated to helping keep the homeless out of the cold is making plans and needs help.
Earlier this year, the Egan Memorial Warming Center helped hundreds of homeless people come in out of the cold.
The center opened for extreme cold weather in February and March.
The center was named for Major Thomas Egan, a homeless veteran, who died outside last December.
The temporary shelter, located inside the old Eugene Armory, helped provide overflow shelter for five nights when temperatures fell below 32 degrees.
Due to space and safety, the shelter had to close. And now, the Egan Warming Center Coalition is looking for a new space.
"We have every expectation that the need will grow this winter. In fact, because of the bad economy, we have more people that are homeless than ever before and more people who are homeless who have never been in that situation before," said Richie Weinman with the City of Eugene.
The coalition is interested in warehouses or large capacity buildings available this winter.
Anyone with that kind of space should call Saint Vincent de Paul or Natasha Garrison at 686-8462.
