Hi 8203432. To answer your question, the Oregon State Legislature approved a state law In June 2011 that legally authorized Oregon's public universities to create campus police forces. After getting the clearance for that, the UO pursued authorization of a police force through the state's Board of Higher Education. The board approved the request in October 2011 and UOPD was officially established in January 2012. Much of the "push" towards making campus police departments has come in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

Can someone explain why the UofO has its own police force when it is located within the city of Eugene?
