UPDATE: On August 15, 2012 at approximately 10:34 AM, a red 1994 Dodge 2500 pickup driven by Stephen J. Dyal, age 54, from Springfield, was westbound on Highway 228 near Milepost 9 when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound 2008 Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicle driven by Bonnie Lee Badgley, age 62, from Sweet Home. Preliminary information indicated the pickup may have been attempting to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone but that has not been confirmed.
Badgley was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints and her vehicle's airbags deployed. A dog in the vehicle was not injured and later was taken to the Linn County animal shelter pending return to her family.
Dyal was transported by ground ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with non-life threatening injuries. He was using safety restraints and his pickup's airbags deployed.
Oregon State Police (OSP) would like to speak to any potential witnesses in the area at the time of the crash. Anyone with pertinent information is asked to call Trooper Jeff Moran at 541 967-2026.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Linn County Sheriff's Office, Lebanon Police Department, Brownsville Fire Department and ODOT. The highway was closed for three hours.
BROWNSVILLE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Oregon State Police say a Springfield man is responsible for a deadly wreck east of Brownsville.
The wreck happened at about 10:40 Wednesday morning and shut down Highway 228 for most of the day.

Preliminary information indicated the pickup may have been attempting to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone but that has not been confirmed.
Investigators are looking for witnesses and want to talk to the driver of the vehicle Dyal was allegedly passing right before the crash.
The name of the woman who died is not being released at this time.
Dyal was taken by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with non-life threatening injuries.
