Reedsport (KMTR) - A woman was killed and her child suffered minor injuries in a crash that blocked Highway 38 in Douglas County for several hours early Tuesday morning.

Police say Sarina Noelle Chavarria, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.  She was using safety restraints and her car's airbag deployed.  Her 20-month-old son, Cyrus Stratton, was seated in a child safety seat and received minor injuries.

The accident happened 11 miles east of Reedsport, just after 2 a.m.  State police say 26-year-old Matthew Dale Fjeld of Coquille was driving an unloaded log truck eastbound when he saw headlights from a westbound passenger car coming his direction.  Fjeld steered to the right but was unable avoid a collision with Chavarria's vehicle.  Fjeld was not hurt.

At this time, investigators do not know why Chavarria's car crossed into the opposite lane of travel.
