EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Police have identified a man who died after being hit by a train on Thursday evening near the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Eugene.

Police say 49-year old Aaron Daywitt of Eugene died in the crash. Friends say he was married, the father of twin girls.

The crash happened at a train crossing around 5:14 PM on Thursday, September 20, near the intersection of 8th Avenue and Hilyard Street.

Daywitt and his bike were trapped underneath the train. Emergency crews initially dispatched paramedics to help, however the man was pronounced dead before emergency crews could fully tend to him.

According to police, the Amtrak train carrying passengers was headed eastbound toward Springfield. They say Daywitt was riding a bike southbound and drove into the path of the train.

The train was forced to sit on the tracks while police and the medical examiner investigated the death, blocking the minimally-used railroad crossing for several hours.

Crews cleared the scene around 10 PM Thursday.
