ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- A passing motorist found a Roseburg woman unconscious and seriously injured on the side of the road at about 2:00 AM on September 19, 2012. The woman was later identified as Anastacia Kindel and she was found on the 500 block of Reston Road.

It was unclear at first whether the incident was a hit-and-run or if Kindel had been attacked but upon follow-up, investigators started a criminal investigation. Detectives were quickly led to Kindel's then boyfriend, 49-year-old marcus Toler.

"She was injured very badly. She had a substantial head injury - that was her most substantial injury - and it was quite bad," says Deputy Dwes Hutson with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. "Then at some point she started pulling out of it and she's still recovering, but she did pull through it."

Toler was arrested on October 2 on multiple charges, including Assault I, Kidnapping and Attempted Murder. He's been lodged in the Douglas County Jail since then and is scheduled to appear in court on February 12.

Deputy Hutson says Kindel is no longer in the hospital, but has a long road of recovery ahead.
