This person should be charged with dangerous driving causing a homicide and crown should be asking / demanding life imprisonment. Ridiculous just assault 2? WTF? What a dumb ass justice system. This is why we have people committing the vengeance homicides. Please fix your dam justice system.

R:e "...two lives changed forever." NO. One person will be inconvenienced for a while, probably feeling sorry for himself, and may even drive drunk again. His family and friends (sympathetic) still have him in their lives. BUT: One man suffered terrible injuries and is DEAD. Those who loved him are bereft. MANY lives chaged forever.

This was just about when bars were closing. The driver was charged for being intoxicated, there's a chance the bicyclist was drunk too. The bicyclist would've survived if HE WAS RIDING ON THE SIDEWALK and disobeying the law and the delusion that somehow riding on the thick white line for the "bike lane" made him safe. Ride on the sidewalk everychance you get bicyclists, just have enough patience slow down for the pedestrians and no one should get hurt.

(1) Driving drunk is not a mistake, it's a choice. No one forced booze down the killer's throat; he didn't accidentally start his vehicle and mistakenly drive off. (2) What business or which individual served him and let him drive away in that condition? Those who aid in the crime should also share the blame.

Now in regards to bicycle riders....PLEASE it is really nice to see you especially when you havent made that decision on if you want to be a car, a pedestrian, or just make up the rules as you go. LIGHTS would be nice. This time of year in particular because in the dark and the rain it is nice to know that there is someone there before you get to them. Sure you may be in your lane and that is awesome but you have to admit if a car came up on you in their lane with no lights in the dark and the rain it would startle you. Just remember that we are all sharing the road...being visible is important just like following the same laws that vehicles do if you are going to be in the road with them.

This truly is sad all the way around. One young man whit his whole life in front of him is dead. Another young man who had his whole life in front of him will be in prison for at least a couple of years. He may be the greatest guy in the world but he killed someone. His "friends" allowed him to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking, and as a result now the lives of two young men are taking a tragic turn.

I only ride a bike. Never had a car. I'm 58. Obey all traffic laws. Don't run lights, stop signs. Not all bike riders are negligent. Just like people who drive cars. They don't all follow the rules of the road. Just like Patrick, who now has killed someone because he is still a dumb over-confident young man. He will see a few years in prison now, no doubt. If he is your friend. Go visit him and drive safely.

it is very sad to hear the bike rider has past away. My heart goes out to the family. I also feel sad for the guy that caused it all. Addiction of any kind can and will cause many problems for many people. What you do can affect others even though you don't think it wont. Understanding addiction is a hard one. Understanding anything is hard for a lot of people. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. You will always get caught at some point. My condolences to both family's. Now someone will have to take responcability for their actions. Sad very sad.
