EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) – A memorial service Saturday for a longtime icon in the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, Anne Dhu McLucas.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Beall Hall on the UO campus Saturday afternoon, October 20th, 2012, to honor the former professor. McLucas and her partner James Gillette were killed last month in their home in a case that’s been called a homicide. The man accused of the crime, Johan Gillette, is now pending trial. Gillette was the son of McLucas’ partner, James Gillette.
McLucas was the former dean at the UO School of Music and Dance. Saturday, hundreds in the audience listened to music in Anne’s honor, also taking part in a community song, signing the hymn “Morning Has Broken.”
Anne was internationally known for study in the foundations of music and the study of music and culture. Those who worked with her say she had a love for all kinds of music, no matter the genre.
“The symposia held both in September and this weekend are justification for that "best is infinite." That Anne's influence goes on, in the music community and in all of the other areas of the world and people and events that she touched,” said Reverend David Maynard, a cousin of Anne McLucas’.
McLucas is credited for landing state funding to help rebuild the School of Music and Dance in the last few years. She was set to retire by the end of the year at age 71.
Several memorial funds have been set up in her name, including a memorial scholarship at the UO that will benefit future music students. For more information on the fund, visit the following website:
