ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- A traffic stop in
Roseburg Tuesday turned into a much bigger issue, one that required help from the bomb squad.
It happened on the 2500 block of NE Stephens Street at about 10:30 PM Tuesday. The officer says after he pulled the car over, he found two long metal pipes. When he went to pick them up, the owner of the vehicle told him to be careful. That's when the officer called the bomb squad to the scene and arrested 56-year-old Charles Keeney.
Keeney was on parole and his charges include two counts of felon in possession of a firearm.
"It was something homemade," says Sergeant Eichenbusch. "It was basically pieces of pipe he had altered in a fashion that they could accept normal shotgun rounds. And he had altered those in a way that they could actually fire through the metal piping."
Eichenbusch says the bomb squad identified the pipes as homemade shotguns. They said by the looks of them, they probably would have worked as functional guns.
Roseburg Police say they don't see cases like this very often, but they do want to remind people that it's illegal to make your own firearms. If you see something that looks like a homemade gun, you're asked to report it to police immediately.
