EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) - A couple of fires in west Eugene kept firefighters busy early Friday morning.

Just after 4:00 AM, an alarm went out for a fire just yards away from Eugene’s fire department headquarters on West 2nd Avenue and Chambers Street. Crews knocked down a fire at a shed that was engulfed in flames when they arrived. The fire threatened a home on West 2nd Avenue, next to the Mr. Appliance store.

Eugene Batallion Chief Don Vaught said the cause of the fire behind the unoccupied home is not known but is being investigated. “This time of the year, it's not uncommon to have warming fires started by homeless individuals. That may or may not be the case, but that's why we're investigating it,” Vaught said.

About twnety minutes later crews responded to another fire a few blocks away on North McKinley Street off Roosevelt Boulevard. It was a small fire, which may not have been related to the first fire.
