Eugene (KMTR) - A truck that ended up in the Willamette River this weekend is still there. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will reduce the water flow at Lookout Point Reservoir, so divers can get it out.The truck ended up in the river under the Beltline Bridge Saturday night. It’s under at least ten feet of water and sitting on a three foot waterline.
The EWEB line supplies water to tens of thousands of homes in the River Road area. Divers worked all day Sunday to try and pull it out.
From the surface the plan was simple -- hook a tow line to the truck and pull it out. However, fast moving water caused problems for divers.
EWEB is prepared if the line should break. There are valves placed along the pipe, and EWEB said they are ready to shut them down at a moments notice.
“On Sunday we went ahead and reduced the flow on either end of the pipe to about 25-percent just in case. If the pipe does rupture, we will shut those valves down immediately so there is no contamination,” said EWEB spokesman, Joe Harwood.
EWEB is working on topping off the Santa Clara Reservoir. The 20 million gallon reservoir should cover water needs for several days.
Divers try to haul the truck out on Wednesday.
