VENETA, Ore. (KMTR) –- The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) says a contractor is removing hazardous trees along Highway 126W this week and next, creating a single lane restriction and short delays for motorists travelling between Eugene and Florence.

Wednesday and Thursday, May 30 and  31, and again Monday through Wednesday, June 4 to 6, the trees will be removed at milepost 17, approximately 2.6 miles east of Mapleton. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane in alternating directions from 6:30 AM to 5 PM on the work days, controlled by flaggers. Motorists should expect a 10- to 20-minute delay.

ODOT reports the trees could be a threat to travellers if they should fall during a windstorm. In some cases, the trees are leaning toward the highway, restrict visibility and shade the highway, preventing frost or ice from thawing.
