Springfield (KMTR) – Changes may be coming to the controversial traffic roundabout in Springfield at Pioneer Parkway and Hayden Bridge Road.

A research report on pedestrian safety in and around roundabouts is being put together.  The report, which should be finished early next year, could help Springfield city leaders ramp up safety at the Pioneer Parkway roundabout.

Pedestrians have complained that drivers are not yielding to people on foot trying to cross the road at the new roundabout.

Extra signs, traffic lights or beacons have been suggested as ways to improve the safety of pedestrians.

Springfield traffic engineer Brian Barnett says the city is "just trying to access how effective they are with helping people with crossings and how much they impact the safety and capacity of the roundabout itself.

Extra signs could cost the city around $10,000.  Beacons and lights could total more than $250,000.

Ditto to Redcity. Peds have no business in the safety hazard that is our roundabout. Crosswalks could be established before or after this thing; but peds should be kept out. (Would it be too sane to suggest we get rid of the roundabout altogether?)

If you want to make the roundabout passable for peds, put a crosswalk in about 50 feet BEFORE the roundabout starts. Peds have NO place in or near the actual roundabout.

Ya I agree that this is confusing to many older folks who have not had to deal with the multi lane versions. That being said....for the love of pete please, please, please, do not park a marked police vehicle there to monitor it. I have seen two motorcycle officers at different times there watching for speeders I imagine, BOTH times were the only times I have seen wrecks there. The roundabout is stressful enough for most drivers without the added pressure of visible police pressence. Nothing against the police there, just please stay out of sight so you dont freak out all the stoned hippies already having a hard enough time with it. unmarked cars are wonderful things.
