Springfield (KMTR) - The Springfield School District is about a month away from wrapping up renovations at the new Two Rivers-Dos Rios Elementary School. In September, Brattain and Moffitt Elementary School students will merge into the new facility. Workers are busy installing new floor tiles and painting the former Springfield Middle School, which closed a year ago. The counters in the library and main office are shorter to accommodate smaller students. The old middle school lockers were removed and replaced with benches. New breakout spaces will allow for smaller group learning.
The school district says the costs are fairly minimal, thanks to a lengthy timeline to complete the upgrades.
“This unique opportunity to have a year to work on the school has allowed us to reuse existing materials, employ the expertise of our maintenance staff and really build what is like a brand new elementary school, but, for of course, a lot less,” explained spokesman Jeff Defranco.
Playground equipment from Moffitt Elementary will be relocated to the new school.
The district plans to tear down Moffitt Elementary but it has other plans for Brattain. Defranco says the historic building will become the Brattain Early Learning Center, bringing several pre-kindergarten programs under one roof.
