SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (KMTR) -- Nancy Golden will retire next year as head of the Springfield School District. She made the announcement official Tuesday morning that she will retire on June 30, 2013.

Golden has been the Superintendent of Springfield Public Schools for ten years. She has been honored many times for her ability to lead and was named Superintendent of the Year in Oregon in 2011. She has also served as Governor John Kitzhaber’s education policy advisor.

"Retiring from Springfield Public Schools is the hardest decision I have made in my career. I love this school district and have tremendous respect for the board, the staff, students and the community,” Golden said. “I consider it an honor that you have trusted me as your leader for a decade. Please know we have done noble work together on behalf of our nearly 11,000 students."

The Springfield School Board will begin a search for a replacement superintendent in the coming weeks. The board promises opportunities for parents, students and the larger community to be involved in the process.
