SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (KMTR) -- In the midst of National Fire Prevention Week, fire crews across the state are reaching out to children, families and adults to learn valuable skills that could save lives.
Springfield firefighters, paramedics and police officers set up in the Jerry's Home Improvement store parking lot on Saturday, October 6, showing off their life-saving gear.
One of the biggest draws was the Jaws of Life demonstration. Crews took an old car and cut it up, showing young eyes how they are able to rescue people trapped inside.
Springfield’s Jaws of Life are now battery-powered. Older versions of the tool used an outboard motor and made a lot of noise during rescue efforts. Springfield received them about a year ago with help from a federal grant.
