Springfield (KMTR) – A local family is getting ready to adopt a special needs child from abroad.  The process is very expensive, so they’re hosting a fundraiser to help pay for the process.  The Hortons have three birth kids, and have adopted four children with special needs through the state.  They thought they were done adopting, until they learned how poorly children with special needs are often treated in Eastern Europe.  Now, they’re about six weeks away from bringing home Milena from Bulgaria.

Milena is almost four years old, and she weighs just ten pounds.  The Hortons say with the proper care, she could have a much brighter future.  With travelling expenses and other fees, Milena’s adoption will cost the Hortons about $25,000.  They’ve hosted a few fundraisers so far, and have one more planned before Milena arrives.

The Harvest Hike is Sunday, October 7th and Mount Pisgah.  There will be multiple hiking trails for adults, and scavenger hunts and other activities for kids.  For registration and other information, check harvesthike.org.
