SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (KMTR) -- A big barbeque will take place in Springfield this Labor Day weekend with hopes of filling stomachs and raising a ton of cash for local veterans.

The Springfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3965 kicked off its annual holiday weekend BBQ Saturday, September 1, 2012 at their headquarters on Main Street near 53
rd Street.

The post is selling half-chickens all weekend long. All of the chicken is prepared, rubbed and barbequed right on the Post’s front patio. Volunteers hope to cook up 3,800 pounds over the three day festival.

Each half is just $6 and all of the money raised goes back to help support the post.

“Helps us raise funds that we use to support our veterans' programs throughout the year,” says John Stanks, one of the chicken barbeque cooks and a retired Navy sailor who served from 1957 to 1987.

“It is great, so you need to try some out!” says Stanks.

The VFW Post 3965 will stay open Sunday and Monday from 10 AM to 5 PM.

The chicken halves cost $6, while sides like macaroni, potato salad, baked beans and coleslaw are $1.50.
