SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (KMTR) – Springfield city officials are hoping to make a few more down-to-earth connections with residents through a new initiative.

Councilors posted up for a meet-and-greet in front of Jerry's Home Improvement Center off Olympic Street in Springfield on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Councilors Sean VanGordon, Marilee Woodrow and Sheri Moore took part, along with Mayor Christine Lundberg.

It’s the second meet-and-greet councilors have done, the first taking place at Albertson’s in the Thurston area. The hope is to make connections with residents on a more casual level.

“We get a chance to educate people about some of the things that are going on in the city that maybe they just don't know a lot about or would ask a question if you were standing right there and you could just ask questions,” says Mayor Christine Lundberg.

Mayor Lundberg estimates about 200 people stopped by. Councilors are hoping to do more meet-and-greets in the coming months.

@clairence -- A good place to start if you are interested in learning more about upcoming events in Springfield is the group's Facebook page. You don't even need to be signed up for Facebook to see the posts on it. https://www.facebook.com/SpringfieldOR . We try to do previews on events when we can. If not, I will try to put nuggets in the story like "they plan on doing more in the near future" to let people know there are other ways they can take part. The reality is that we cannot preview every single event coming up. Community calendars are the best way to keep track of that.

how would I have known about this beforehand? (I hate reading about events that I'd like to go to.. after they have happened)

At least the springfield city council is making an effort to get out and meet its city members. The Eugene city council just keeps costing the city taxpayers more money, ie occupy park and now the law suit over the cop when the should of settled out of court. The Eugene city council is the best thing for the city of Springfield, when I get a chance I will be moving across the way.

If they do anything about what the people told them I will be surprised.
