EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- A big boost from The Walt Disney Company is helping
Eugene middle school students get back in the garden. Spencer Butte Middle School recently won a $900 grant to repair and add to the green space.
The award is helping the group install a vertical garden for leafy greens, build a new composting box and plant new vegetables. Seventh-graders Megan Henney and Hunter Spence helped secure the grant and plan Saturday’s work party.
"This isn't really something that a lot of kids want to do. It's a lot of work, but we were pretty surprised - a whole bunch of people showed up,” said Hunter. About 30 kids spent Saturday, April 21, 2012, replanting the community garden at Spencer Butte Middle School. "It's definitely been stressful but, you know, you're doing a good thing and it makes it all worth it,” said Megan.
Gardening is an elective in which any student at the school can take part. Some of the plants grown in the garden will be served in the school's cafeteria.
