EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) – Tearing a new hole in the threat of identity theft, dozens of residents from Eugene/Springfield lined up a local credit union for its annual Shred Fest. For the last four years, Oregon Community Credit Union has been holding Shred Fest, letting people drop off unlimited amounts of waste paper containing sensitive data.
In less than an hour, the pile stacked up at OCCU’s corporate office on Chad Drive in Eugene grew to at least a five-by-five-foot mass of thousands of sheets of paper. In 2011, crews shredded about 77,000 pounds of paper. For 2012, they’re going for 100,000 pounds.
“We had a line at the corporate office today all the way out to Chad,” said Kristi Rysdam, a spokeswoman for Oregon Community Credit Union. “This is one way we're helping protect the community from falling victim to something that they really don't have to.”
“Really think about what you put in your trash as far as mail offers, any credit applications, receipts,” Rysdam added.
Oregon Community Credit Union is letting anyone drop off documents to shred at all of its branches free of charge through the end of May 2012.
