ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- A Roseburg teen was killed and three others were injured in a rollover crash this weekend in the community of Green. Investigators say it may take quite a bit of time to determine just what caused it.
The accident occurred on the 4700 block of Happy Valley Road near Roseburg around 11:20 on Saturday night. Four Roseburg teens were in the car when officials say the driver, 18-year-old Kaylyn Oelrich, seemed to have lost control of the vehicle.
Oelrich was driving a Kia SUV. The vehicle went off the road and officials say it appears Oelrich tried to regain control of it but the car rolled and she was ejected. Oelrich was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hector Mandera and Jose Garcia, both 18, and a 14-year-old Roseburg boy were all transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg. Mandera was later moved to Sacred Heart at Riverbend in Springfield.
Officials say the crash could have happened for a number of reasons. It'll likely be a significant amount of time before they're able to determine the cause of the accident. "We're going to be assisted by a reconstructionist, as well as the Douglas County Medical Examiner's Office," says Lt. Chris Merrifield of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Their initial investigation has found that speed was not a factor.
Oelrich graduated from Roseburg High School last year and had been working at Sherm's Thunderbird, a local grocery store. Her boss, manager Steve Olsrud, had nothing but good things to say about Oelrich.
"She had been here about a year, a little over a year actually. Good employee, good kid. Always came to work on time. Did a real good job for us. It's really a sad time for us, " says Olsrud.
Oelrich was also a relative of a Roseburg Police Officer. A vigil was held Sunday evening in her honor at Sherm's.
