ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- The Roseburg Police Department says a man accused of firing a gun at officers is now linked to the death of a 71-year-old man on Monday.
23-year-old Jonathan Lackey is currently being held at the Douglas County jail.
On the morning of Monday, December 17, firefighters responded to a burning home on SE Ramp Street in Roseburg.
Once inside, firefighters found one man dead. 71-year-old Richard Casebeer is presumed to be the victim, as he is the lone resident at the home and has not been contacted since that time.
The Roseburg Police Department responded for the death investigation and soon found evidence that suggested the incident may have been a homicide.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team began investigating and identified Jonathan Lackey as a person of interest in the homicide.
Later that afternoon, Detectives learned Lackey was staying at the Casa Loma Motel in Roseburg and they attempted to contact him there.
Detectives say Lackey came out of his room, pointed a handgun and started shooting. There was a brief exchange of gunfire between detectives and Lackey before Lackey fled back inside the room. After several hours of negotiations, Lackey surrendered without further incident.
Both incidents are still being investigated by the Major Crimes Team and the Oregon State Police.
