Roseburg (KMTR) - The Roseburg School Board has decided not to close any elementary schools to help balance the budget. But the superintendent says the school district is still facing a huge deficit.The district is still in the red after cutting $9 million from the budget.
Suggestions have recently been floated to save money by closing Rose or Green Elementary Schools.
The Roseburg School District may consider a temporary local tax to bring in revenue. No decision has been made do to so, however Superintendent Larry Parsons says there are not many other options.
“We certainly have the option to make more cuts to the system but that's something the board has rejected,” Parsons said. “The board has said we're not making anymore cuts. We have class sizes in the middle schools and high schools of 38 in some of our core classes. They get it that we can't make anymore cuts.”
It has been four years since the Roseburg district has been able to afford new tools, curriculum, or additional maintenance.
