Corvallis (KMTR) - Corvallis is joining Portland as the only cities in Oregon to banish single-use plastic bags from store check stands. The city council approved an ordinance Monday night to remove the plastic option at check stands in favor of reusable bags or paper bags.Plastic bags for produce will not be affected.
Businesses with more than 50 employees will have six months to make the switch; smaller stores have a year. After that, stores are subject to a $200 fine for using plastic bags.
Customers who do not bring their own reusable bags will pay a 5¢ fee for each paper bag.
