EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) - Plans for civic stadium have yet to make a homerun.
In a board meeting Wednesday night, Superintendent Sheldon Berman rejected the plan that Rick Wright, owner of Market of Choice, put on the table.
Wright asked the district for a one-year lease with the option to rent after that year. Berman, however, said he was not interested in taking a short-term deal because Civic Stadium is worth more than that.
Months ago, the 4J School District considered three separate proposals from the YMCA, Fred Meyers and Save Civic Stadium claiming none of the them would best fit what they thought the community wanted.
At that time, the district again put out an invitation for ideas. The only received the plan from Wright.
The district told NewsSource 16 they'd rather focus on education for now, give the community more time to pull resources and see them return with better ideas. Former proposals, according to Barb Bellamy, were more appealing to Berman than the one from Wright.
While some people were surprised that there was yet another rejection, others were glad the district wants to offer more time.
Wright told media he understands Berman's decision and is willing to work with groups to redevelop the site in the future.
