Mapleton (KMTR) - Lane County search and rescue crews were called to the Mapleton area early Thursday morning and began evacuating people near the rising Siuslaw River.

People have been cleared out of the Riverview Apartment complex in Mapleton and a neaby mobile home park is also being evacuated. Residents who live in any other area that are prone to severe flooding are also being evacuated.

A temporary shelter has been set up at the Florence Events Center.

The Oregon Department of Transportation closed Highway 126 at Cushman about 8 a.m. because of high water. Three feet of water was covering the roadway.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office says flooding is the worst on the west side of the county, however residents along the Mohawk River north of Springfield are also at risk, especially along Sunderman Road.

After checking ODOT TripCheck site, Hwy. 126 looks to be closed at Cushman due to high water so evacuating from Mapleton to Florence Event Center may not be possible.
