Charleston (KMTR) - Local salmon fishermen are still looking for disaster relief dollars after several bad fishing years.  Trollers met for a brainstorming session in Charleston Thursday.  They say they've never received full funding for past seasons that have already been declared disasters, and they want to add 2011 to the list of "failed fishery" years.  Trollers say the money is important for the whole coastal community, not just fishing boats.  J.D. Evanow said, "It all stays local, so by the time that money spins around in our communities and stuff it's created quite a bit of income for a lot of different people."

Fishermen also expressed disappointment with elected officials, for not delivering the help they promised.  Organizers say they invited all legislators from Oregon's coastal caucus to attend the meeting; Peter Defazio was the only member to send a representative.

We keep hearing about how well managed our fisheries are. They why aren't our fishermen fishing and catching fish? If fish are managed well, why is govt spending all this money? Let fishermen fish! The federal government allotted more than $24 million for disaster relief programs in OR, WA, and CA. $12 million was administered by the NOAA for three programs (1): A $4 million WA license buy out, administered by the WA DFW, retired 302 of 1,378 WA salmon troll, Columbia River gill-net, and WA charter licenses. $6 million went to "habitat-restoration", administered by U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. OR got $2.2 million to hire displaced fishermen for restoration jobs. In 1995, about 100 jobs were available through this program. $2.2 million data-collection jobs program ("at-sea research" or "test fishing") administered by the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. This program hired fishermen to collect data for biological research aimed at improving fishery management. (Did it?) 11 Oregon projects included studies of commercial and sport-fishing by-catch mortality, sturgeon tagging, and other salmon-related research. (has it improved the fisheries?) In addition, FEMA gave out $9 million for disaster unemployment for 1994: $2 million for Oregon, $5.8 million for Washington, and $1.3 million for California. The Small Business Administration also authorized $3 million for disaster relief loans.

Let me get this strait. Fishermen who didn’t catch fish want taxpayers to pay for that. So it’s “sorry old lady taxpayer, you’ll have to eat dog food because we didn’t catch fish this year, and YOU need to bail us out”. You’ve got to realize that the “bailout” dollars are not just printed somewhere, they are TAKEN away, by force from working AND retired men and women. It’s a business dude, you fail, you lose. Don’t come knocking at my door for a handout! I’m hurting just as bad as you, and can JUST feed my family as it is. I can’t afford ANY more taxes! Suck it UP!
