Eugene (KMTR) – Oregon’s annual “Civil War” is already being fought—but not on the gridiron.
Instead, football fans are rolling up their sleeves, to support the University of Oregon Ducks, the Oregon State Beavers and local blood banks.
Duck fans kicked off their part of the 8th annual Civil War Blood Drive at the Casanova Center at Autzen Stadium Thursday.
Everyone who registers to give blood can vote for their team and has a chance to win tickets to the Civil War game on December 3rd in Eugene.
“The blood drive is mostly to play on the competition between the Ducks and the Beavers that is so inset in our culture around here,” explained Kristi McElhinney of Lane Memorial Blood Bank.
Katie Harbert volunteered to be one of the first ‘soldiers’ for the Ducks, “definitely to root for the Ducks and help our team along. I'm a team player so I’ve got to root for the Ducks. And its just good to get down here and give blood because I know people need it and its an easy enough thing to do.”
Last year, fans, students and alumni of both schools donated more than 7,500 units of blood and platelets.
The blood drive runs through November 21st. Fans may donate at any Red Cross, or Lane Memorial Blood Bank location.
