Salem (KMTR) - Oregon's attorney general has cracked down on some questionable claims on Kellogg’s cereal boxes. As a result, the company will change its labeling and donate $300,000 worth of cereal to the Oregon Food Bank.
The case involves packaging for Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, Cocoa Krispies, Frosted Krispies and Multi-grain Jumbo Krispies.
The issue is the big banner on the box claiming the cereal boosts immunity. Keith Dubanevich of the Attorney General’s Office says an investigation was launched and the company was asked to prove that claim.
“The implied claim that if somebody ate Cocoa Krispies, that it might help them avoid getting swine flu, and given the season, that's a pretty important claim to be making,” Dubanevich said. “We thought we would inquire at the same time that they had any scientific proof that eating what is a fairly sugary cereal, whether eating that cereal was good for children's health.”
Instead of offering proof, the company agreed to change the labeling, and take the immunity claim off its cereal boxes by January 15th.
