EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Many local voters are sharing their political views online this election, but some are breaking an Oregon law without even knowing it.
ORS 260.695 (7) states, "A person may not show the person’s own marked ballot to another person to reveal how it was marked." Some social media users have been snapping photos of their ballots - after they've been filled in - to share online. According to the statute, that's illegal.
Many voters NewsSource 16 spoke with Monday said they had never heard of the law, but would let their friends know to be careful of what they're sharing online.
Breaking this law is a civil penalty, but someone has to file a complaint to the Secretary of State's office for any action to be taken. Violators face a $75 fine.
