BEND, Ore. (KMTR) -- It’s a sure sign in these parts that winter is setting in; Oregon highway officials have closed Highway 242, the old McKenzie Pass Highway between McKenzie Bridge and Sisters.
Maintenance managers with the Oregon Department of Transportation made the decision to close the highway for the winter season because of higher than anticipated snowfall. The highway is closed every winter when the snow makes it impossible to keep the road open.
ODOT’s records show the earliest closure of the Old McKenzie Pass was October 18, 1996. The latest closure happened January 10, 1939.
