CORVALLIS, Ore. (KMTR) - Balance beam, high bars, vault, floor routine and more will put thousands of people in Oregon State University’s Gill Coliseum this weekend as Corvallis plays host to the Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Team Championships.
Eight qualifying Pac-12 teams will take part in the annual competition, including OSU’s women’s team. Currently, the team is ranked tenth in the U.S.
This year will be the first home court advantage for the Beavers since 2006. Last year, the team placed third in the tournament. In 2011, they won.
The athletes and coaches are hoping thousands of fans at home will help push them to the top this year.
“We've done really well over the years: we've qualified for the NCAA Championships seven years in a row. We have a long tradition of great gymnastics all the way back, so fortunately it's wonderful because the community comes out and supports us. We have three or four thousand people at all of our home meets. It's an exciting event,” said Michael Chaplin, Association Head Coach for the Oregon State Women’s Gymnastics Team.
The championship tournament takes place this Saturday, March 23. The tournament starts at 1:30 PM in Gill Coliseum. OSU will begin competing at 7 PM. Gill Coliseum will also host the NCAA West Regional Women’s Gymnastics Tournament in early April in which OSU’s women's team will likely take part.
