ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say an Oregon highway worker rescued an injured man from a pickup truck that wound up submerged in a pond after a five-vehicle crash east of Albany.

Troopers said the driver of one pickup towing a flatbed trailer of hay failed to notice stopped traffic ahead on Tuesday afternoon on Highway 20 and collided with the rear of a pickup driven by 56-year-old Dean Stilwell of Sweet Home. The chain reaction crash eventually involved three other vehicles.

Stilwell's truck ended up submerged in a nearby pond. The trooper says 47-year-old Oregon Transportation Department worker Troy Elverfield grabbed a metal rod and dove into the water. He managed to break the driver's side window and finally pulled Stilwell free.

Five people reportedly were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver towing the hay trailer was cited for careless driving.
