SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (KMTR) -- You could call it one of the first football “bowl games” of the winter season in
Springfield this weekend.
Kicking off Saturday, December 10th, 2011, more than a hundred flag football players from around the northwest are taking part in the 6th annual Northwest Flag Football Championship through Sunday.
13 teams compete, some traveling from Washington. Saturday, participants spent the afternoon competing in several contests including the fastest sprint, furthest punt and furthest throw.
Organizers say the annual tourney grows each year and not just with the younger crowd.
“It's kind of impressive because we've got a ... We have a lot of players that are in their 40's even, I have a guy that's in his 50's. They're still plugging along, having fun, enjoying what they love to do, play football on a weekend,” said Randy Stiles, a tournament organizer with Maximus Sports Group.
The championship tournament continues through Sunday afternoon at the Willamalane Center on 32nd Street in Springfield. The closet main cross street to the Center is Main Street.
