DRAIN, Ore. (KMTR) -- North Douglas High School seniors Zach Nash and Thompson Rogers both see themselves involved with sports in the future and winning a Nike athletic shoe design competition last week brings them both a little closer to their goal.

Last week they took a field trip with a group of students from their school to the Nike Headquarters in Beaverton to attend the 5th Annual Jordan Brand Experience Event. More than 800 high school students participated in the event this year. The athletic shoe design competition was part of the event and there were more than 200 entries.

Nash came in first place and Thompson's design was the runner-up.

"I'm kind of inspired by Zach, just because he's really good at this," says Rogers. "And I was like, I'll give it a try. You know, I think I could do this. I used a computer program, designed my shoe, turned it in. I guess it was good. I guess Nike liked it."

Rogers wants to become a physical trainer in the future. This was his first shoe design, but Nash has been designing shoes for more than a year. He's an avid runner and hopes to design athletic shoes as a career.

"I love running and it's going to be a great way for me to work with what I love," says Nash.

"I'll be able to see my designs on other people and I think that's cool."

Nash called his design the Nike Wave. It has different shades of blue with a water pattern. Rogers' design is called the Pit Viper. It's black, grey and dark green and features reptile-like scales.

Neither student had been to the Nike Headquarters before and both say they're even more inspired to start their careers after the visit.
