omerguy: AeroVironment runs the stations. That company is a private company. Drivers will eventually need to pay for the electricity they use at the stations, however, it is temporarily free. Here's is the answer in ODOT's language, per the press release which is posted at the bottom of the article: "Electric vehicle drivers will be able to activate access to the charging stations by signing up for the AV Charging Network at evsolutions.com/avnetwork or by calling toll-free at 888-833-2148. Once enrolled, EV drivers will receive an AV Network key fob that will allow access to all AeroVironment chargers along the West Coast Electric Highway. AeroVironment is also providing free charging for a limited time, giving EV drivers freedom and convenience on the open road."

Do the drivers of these electric vehicles get to recharge at no cost at the charging stations?

Good money after a bad idea...for a few elites that can afford those types of vehicles. Has the state figured out how to tax them for road use and all the other taxes at the pump? Or will they get a free ride? China has already reported recently (they have the most electrics on the road) that pollution from recharging is creating more pollution than gas driven engines.

Oh! one very important thing I forgot, didn't General Motors just suspend production of the Chevy Volt because of the lack of demand. Wait and see folks but it is more money after bad ideas, just like we have seen in Oregon for the past three decades.

There are quite a few things missing in this story. First what is the cost or future cost of plugging your vehicle into one of these charging stations. Why does there have to be one every 25 miles, is that all the further these vehicles will travel on a charge. What do you do if you get to one of these charging stations and your like 8th or 9th in line, do you need to pack a sleeping bag and extra provisions. Why are tax payers having to help these private companies. What happens when your car will no longer take a charge, do you throw it away or buy new batteries to the tune of thousands of dollars. Is this a rich people only platform. Can someone tell me what is going on. Did anyone really think this through or is it another boondoggle by someone trying to make a buck off the backs of others. We have the resources and technology to make gas cheap, and safe. We have the resources to make hydrogen fuel and vehicles. Look at the ethanol boondoggle, the minute they put that stuff in your gas, your mileage dropped, you have to buy more fuel, thus paying more taxes. Tell me that was not by design. Folks we have to wake up and elect leaders that have some conceptual ability, and someone with morals beyond just lining their own and their buddies pockets. Government no longer works for you, you work for the Government, the tail is wagging the dog.
