EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) --  The Children's Trust Fund of Oregon has recently created new charity plates called the 'Keep Kids Safe' plates. Funds raised from the new license plates will go toward preventing child abuse in the state.

The Children's Trust Fund of Oregon will allocate the funds to proven, successful child abuse prevention programs around Oregon. In Eugene, Birth to Three is an established non-profit organization helping new parents prevent child abuse before it happens. They're one beneficiary of the plates' funds and say there's a big need.

“The last year for which we have verifiable stats is 2010 and in that year, nearly 11,000 children were affected by child abuse and nearly half of those kids were under age six,” says Marilyn Milne of Birth to Three. “The need is great for funding for programs that do work to prevent child abuse and this license plate program is one other element that people can put to work.”

Milne says that's enough children to fill 170 school buses. She says any and all funding to help prevent child abuse is definitely needed in Oregon.

The plates are an additional $30 on top of normal license plates fees and they’ll be available for purchase by October 15.
