PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Police say officers fired at a man on the roof of a downtown Portland parking garage early Wednesday, and the man was later found dead.
Sgt. Pete Simpson told KGW-TV the confrontation happened after a despondent man told dispatchers he had committed a robbery and planned to jump.
Simpson said the man was armed and no officer was hit by gunfire. He said the shooting happened about 4 a.m. as a crisis negotiation team was headed for the garage.
Simpson said two officers fired shots, the man dropped out of sight, and officers who used Fire Bureau ladders to climb to concealed areas found him dead atop an elevator shaft.
The police spokesman says he can't provide further detail until investigators sort out the sequence of events.
