EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Fire investigators are now looking into what caused an early morning house fire in southwest Eugene, not far from Churchill High School.
It started shortly after 5 AM Wednesday at a house on the 3700 block of Peppertree Drive. Arriving firefighters reported seeing flames in the garage area of the house.
One person was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. He had reentered the burning home to rescue a pet.
“Actually two of them went in and one came back out,” said Lance Lighty of Eugene Fire and EMS. “And so we went into rescue mode and sent crew in right away looking for him. They could not find the victim.”
Rescuers eventually found the man lying on the ground nearby. He was unconscious, but alive.
The garage was a total loss and there was smoke damage inside the house. Neighboring homes were also affected, but there was only slight damage to them.
