ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- Because natural disasters can happen any time, it's important to talk to your insurance agent and find out whether or not your home will be covered in the case of an emergency.

In Oregon, we're at risk from many natural factors like extreme wind, tsunamis and flooding and, depending on your plan, basic homeowners insurance may not cover the damages. Flood insurance, for instance, is usually separate from homeowner's insurance which protects against a lot of circumstances, but not all of them.

"Coverage on a homeowner's [policy] is so broad, that you can say what's not covered. And basically, what's not covered is earthquake, flood, wear and tear, insects - things like that," says Allan Painter, a local insurance agent.

Even if you have flood insurance on your home, your belongings inside may not be insured. Always look into supplemental content insurance, to protect all of your personal belongings and not just your home.

Painter says the most important thing people can do to prepare for disaster is talk to their insurance agents. Ask a lot of questions and make sure you know exactly what's covered under your current policy - and what isn't.
