EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) –- Some of the first major road construction projects of the summer are now underway in Eugene. Approximately seven blocks of Jefferson Street are under construction, with work starting near downtown and continuing south.

Two different projects are already causing some delays and closures. The first is the Jefferson & West 24th Avenue Repairs; the second is the Jefferson / Washington Street Intersection Repairs.

The Jefferson & West 24th Avenue Repairs project will proceed in three phases. Phase One will put crews between 19th and 24th Avenue on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Contractors are doing an overlay on that area, ripping out about three inches of road surface and laying down a recycled asphalt/concrete mix.

Crews should finish up the overlay work by the end of Wednesday, May 16, 2012. Until the work is finished, traffic will be down to one southbound lane only.

June 1st, 2012, crews will start the second phase of the project, with a total road repair of Jefferson Street between 25th Avenue and 28th Avenues. This phase of the project will take several weeks to complete.

"People are being detoured onto local streets, streets that people might not have ever even driven on before, so you have to be really careful when you're driving like that because you don't know necessarily where all the stop signs are, where kids are likely to playing, where there might be bicycles,” says Eric Jones, Public Affairs Manager for Eugene Public Works.

The third leg of the Jefferson & West 24th Avenue Repairs project will be an overlay of West 24th Avenue between Chambers and Jefferson Streets.

Intersections on Jefferson Street and Washington Street are also under repair; they are being rebuilt with cement at 10th and 11th Avenues. Other nearby intersections will be targeted soon, with all of the work taking a couple months to complete.

Starting this week, contractors will also begin an overlay project and sidewalk access ramp work on Green Acres Road between Delta Highway and Norkenzie Road.
