EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) – The administration at a local elementary school has decided to cancel all Valentine's Day celebrations at the school and some parents and students are upset.

McCornack Elementary in Eugene sent out a memo Friday asking parents to “refrain from sending holiday cards and items of any kind for distribution at school”. The memo mentions the school doesn't want unhealthy food in the classroom, but that's district policy. It's the part about Valentine's Day cards that has people upset.

One fifth grader even wrote a letter to the Register Guard saying the school's decision makes her very sad. She writes, “Lots of bad things have been happening in schools that are making people sad and I believe celebrating the holiday could us all back together.”

Danielle Benson is a parent of a fifth grade boy at McCornack. She’s had two other children attend and graduate from the school and has always supported McCornack. When she read the memo on Friday she was immediately upset and so was her son.

"Just writing compliments and notes to your fellow classmates, I think this is the perfect day to do it and it's just really sad kids aren't going to get to experience that now,” says Benson. “They don't need to spend a lot of time. Take the last ten, fifteen minutes of the school day - maybe a half hour - but they don't need that long and let kids pass out valentines.”

Benson says a group of students actually sent a petition around recess Monday and got a lot of kids to sign it. After recess they held a small meeting with the principal hoping to change her mind, but they did not.

Officials at 4J say the district leaves it up to each school to decide how or if they want to celebrate birthdays and holidays. McCornack's principal says they didn't intend to be anti-Valentine's Day when they sent out the memo. The school just wants to respect every child's culture and also wants to make sure their limited class time is used for education and learning.

Hey Crowd P TV, These are children and they don't have per say any girlfriends or boyfriends, and aren't stressing that kind of bull. Just insecure adults might be sweating it.......

Where is the love? One day out of the whole year and those little kids can't celabrate the American tradition of Valentines Day. I would have been devastated had our teachers did that to me, a day of loving kindness outlawed, another sad move from those in charge. Can't say Merry Christmas-either, what next? Stupid rules to sit around and make up. Sick

Hey, I don't agree with the decision, but it's her decision to make. I have no idea what's behind it. I can tell you that Ms. Katsuda is not a bad person- she is very kind and helpful. She is not catering to "dang ferners" and this is not a commie plot of any kind. On the one hand, I can see how it would be more inclusive for kids who cannot afford Valentine's, or JW's (and others) who are not permitted due to religious freedom, not to mention it's a holiday for lovers- not for schoolkids... On the other hand, what's the harm in passing around nice little cards for Valentine's as long as nobody is left out (who doesn't choose to be.) I would like more information from the horse's mouth; I feel the reporter could have done a better job at giving us ALL of the information- reasons behind the decision, etc. Particularly since he/she took the time to find out about a playground petition- was a quote from Ms. Katsuda too elusive? :)

Great...I can appreciate not bringing candy to school...but the Valentine's Day card exchange..too far. At my daughter's school (Prairie Mountain) students are allowed to give Valentine's Day cards...but must give a card to each and every student in their class. Seems fair enough that way.

Yea for this school! Valentines Day sucks. It makes boyfriendless/girlfriendless people feel left out and coupled people don't need it. Once less holiday for pushing candy and paper goods to consumers.

Last I checked,, We live in the United States of America. land of the free and home of the brave.I like that "free" part, freedom of expression..freedom of speech..etc.. etc..The only CULTURE that does not celebrate This holiday.. is a religious culture of Muslims. WE are in America..this is a tradition here. We do not live in the middle east or any other country that has muslims. This principle would punish our very own American children because he/she..doesn't want to offend another culture? How bout..its offensive that an American teacher caters to other cultures or religions before that of our own citizens. Now ..THAT..is OFFENSIVE in my book!

Only in Eugene LOL LOL What the hell does culture have to do with kids taking 15 minutes from their learning-packed-day to exchange a little love and comraderie by exchanging Valentines? Again, only in Eugene, Oregon !!

“.....To promote an inclusive learning environment and honor differences we ask that you refrain from sending holiday cards and items of any kind for distribution at school. We will continue to create a fun, positive classroom climate in a variety of ways that simultaneously support our focus on learning.....” So you are saying that it is ok for the culture of Americans to be forbidden in order to make all others who come to our shores feel more “at home” to follow their cultures here: I TOTALLY DISAGREE with you!!!! For one, others come here because we are the “home of the free”, or used to be until those that came here decided that they want to follow their own traditions from their home countries and someone decided that to do so, WE, Americans, have to stop practicing our own traditions so they can feel more at home. I’m sick of this kind of mentality. If You, as a foreigner, or transplanted person, or family from another country come here, feel free to follow your customs: BUT DON’T TELL ME THAT I, BORN HERE FROM GENERATIONS BORN HERE, CAN’T FOLLOW MY TRADITIONS!!! I have no problem with you celebrating the events you did wherever you came from, but I came from HERE, and I have the RIGHT just as you do, to celebrate MY events just as we had done for centuries before you got here. And BTW, stop taking all the fun out of being a kid!!! YOU are fostering prejudice by doing things the way you are. By disallowing American traditions to be respected, you teach kids that it ISN’T OK do so. Where is the INCLUSION in that ?

The Burger-meister Meisterburger seems to be making a special appearance just in time for Valentine's Day! ...WOW! It's a sad day in this country when it's 'illegal' for kids to celebrate Valentine's Day in school...Wouldn't want unhealthy food like candy hearts and negatively-sweet Valentine Cards to taint our children...SAD. :(

It is do sad that once again a small portion of the population has more control over the day to day then the larger group. By not celebrating because it may offend a few, they choose to offend a whole lot of people. Yeah that seems inclusive!
