EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- With drier months ahead, a
Lane County group is hoping to bring the race-car driver out in everyone.
Turning heads at the Valley River Center in Eugene on Saturday, March 31, 2012, the Emerald Empire Sports Car Club put on its spring Test & Tune event. About 60 drivers took part, racing their cars around a short “autocross” course in the mall’s northwest parking lot.
The Emerald Empire Sports Car Club is nearly 50 years old and takes part in various car racing activities each year.
The group conducts parking lot course time trial races - also road racing and hill climbing races - all with cars.
Organizers say no matter what kind of car you have, anyone can take part, even those with a 4-cyclinder Toyota Camry. All you need is a passion to drive, according to Burt Jacobson, one of the organizers at Saturday’s race.
“It's really good for everybody. I have two grown children now and they both autocrossed, and they're both very capable hand on the street. When things surprise you, the things you learn doing this will actually save your life on the street,” says Burt.
If you’ve never done it, the racing is exhilarating. Check out the video attached to this article.
The group charges about 30 bucks or less for annual membership to the club. Special events, like Saturday’s autocross race, cost around 15 bucks.
